R Praggnanandhaa won the Tata Steel Masters, in a dramatic fashion with a tiebreak victory over D Gukesh, and this must be a huge moment for him. It’s also impressive that he’s the first Indian to win the top prize at this prestigious event since Viswanathan Anand’s 2006 victory.

The fact that both Pragg and Gukesh ended up in a tie after the classical rounds—despite the intense final round losses—shows just how high-level their competition was throughout the tournament. It’s unfortunate for Gukesh to lose his unbeaten streak, especially as the World Champion against Arjun Erigaisi though there were some drawing chances in the game.
